  • Loyalty and Jiu-Jitsu – A Few of My Thoughts on the Subject

I know that some people consider it an outdated concept, but loyalty is important to me. I try to be loyal in all of my endeavors, and I expect others to be loyal to me in return. I’ve been with one firm for almost 30 years, I stayed with my one and only Karate instructor from the age of 19 until he passed away when I was in my late 40’s, and I’ve been loyal to one woman longer than many of my teammates have been alive. She Looks the Same – Me, Not So Much . . . I also am proud and fortunate to be able to say that I have been training at Steel City Martial Arts under Sonny Achille for almost 11 years, that Sonny has been training under Professor Pedro Sauer ....

  • Can I Wear a Colored Gi to Class?

Can I Wear a Colored Gi to Class?

“So what’s the deal with gi colors – can I wear a colored gi?” We get this question all the time from newer students. (Usually it’s right after, “How long will it take me to make Black Belt . . . ?) Our answer is pretty simple. “You can wear whatever color gi you want – please just come to class and be sure to wash your gi after every class!” Yes, Grasshopper, Colored Gis Are Old School . . .
We know that this question has different answers at different schools and that some instructors like their students to wear only white gis. We have no argument with that. But at SCMA we’ve never worried about the color of ....

  • The Road to Black Belt

    The Road to Black Belt

Anytime three or more Jiu-Jitsu students gather together, you can be certain that the issue of rank will come up in the discussion. There are only 5 basic belts in the Jiu-Jitsu rank system: White, Blue, Purple, Brown, and Black. And it’s generally recognized that it takes a lot longer to achieve rank in Jiu-Jitsu than in most other martial arts. If White Belt is the hardest belt to achieve in Jiu-Jitsu (because you have to get off the couch and into the school!), then Black Belt certainly has to come in a close second. On April 29th, Professor Sonny Achille proudly tied Black Belts around two very dedicated and sincere Jiu-Jitsu practitioners: Bill Krall and Joe Scott. Both Bill ....

    Calling All Tournament Sponsors

The annual Western Pennsylvania Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Championships is nearly here. On Oct. 22, more than 300 competitors as well as their friends and family will descend on on Baldwin High School (our new bigger, better venue!) to chase the Pittsburgh area’s most prestigious competition titles. This our 10th event, and each year we have seen the tournament grow. In the last decade, jiu-jitsu in Pittsburgh has exploded with a slew of new gyms and new grapplers sprouting up around the city. The sport at large has grown as well, which means that we see competitors traveling from as far as New York, Canada, and New Jersey to take part in our event. For business owners, this is an ....

Press Release: Bully Prevention Week at SCMA

    PITTSBURGH, PA—August 10, 2016—
Steel City Martial Arts (SCMA), an award-winning martial arts school in Castle Shannon, is offering a free week of Bully Prevention classes to ring-in a new school year in partnership with local educators and local law enforcement. According to the Center for Disease Control, experiencing bullying puts a child at a greater risk for problems ranging from depression to reduced academic performance. Some studies report that as many as one out of four students will be bullied during their academic careers. “Sometimes we forget how hard it is to be a kid,” Santino Achille, instructor at SCMA, says. “Bullying has always been a ....

  • Bully Prevention Week FAQ

    Bully Prevention Week FAQ

The response that we’ve seen about our first offering of Bully Prevention Week has been overwhelmingly positive. Thanks to the way our students represent our school when they are not in the gym training, we are blessed with a great reputation and people that are excited to talk about what we do. We’ve gotten a few questions about the program that we wanted to address really quick: Q: Can the kids come every day of Bully Prevention Week or just one day? A: Current students and new visitors are welcome to attend all three! Q: Are all of the classes in Bully Prevention Week the same? A: Nope! Each day we will cover something new, building a bit on what we learned in ....
